Numerology Terms Glossary
Numerology terms are the names given to numbers derived from the letters of a name and the digits of a birth date using fixed rules. This glossary gives every term used in these reports a definition, symbolic interpretation, calculation rule, worked example, and a plain statement of what the term does not claim.
Every term below is used in the reports on this site and is calculated with the rule described here. The terms are grouped by what they are derived from rather than alphabetically, so you can see which numbers change if the name changes and which stay fixed because they come from the birth date.
Derived from the birth date
These depend only on the birth date. Changing the name does not change them.
Life Path Number
Possible values1–9, 11, 22, 33
The life path number is derived from the complete birth date and is taken in numerology to represent a person's main theme. It is the most widely used value in numerology and stays fixed for life, because the birth date does not change.

How it is calculated
- The month, day, and year are each reduced separately, and master numbers (11, 22, 33) are kept at this step.
- For the year, the four digits are added first, then reduced.
- The three results are added together and that total is reduced again.
Worked example
For 17 April 1995: month 4 → 4; day 17 → 1+7 = 8; year 1+9+9+5 = 24 → 2+4 = 6. Total 4+8+6 = 18 → 1+8 = 9. The life path number is 9.
What it is not
It does not measure character, predict events, or determine what a person will do. It is a symbolic starting point.
Birthday Number
Possible values1–9, 11, 22
The birthday number comes from the day of the month a person was born and is read as a secondary emphasis alongside the life path theme.

- Only the day of the month is taken and reduced, keeping master numbers.
- The month and year do not enter this calculation.

17 → 1+7 = 8. The birthday number is 8.
What it is not
It does not replace the life path number; it sits beside it as a secondary note.
Attitude Number
Possible values1–9, 11, 22, 33
The attitude number is the sum of the birth month and the day of the month, and is taken to represent how a person first approaches a new situation.

- The birth month and the day of the month are added directly, without reducing them first.
- The total is then reduced, keeping master numbers.
Worked example
4 + 17 = 21 → 2+1 = 3. The attitude number is 3.
What it is not
It does not predict behaviour. It is a symbolic heading about first contact only.
Pinnacles

Pinnacles are four numbers produced from the month, day, and year of the birth date that divide life into four long periods, each said to carry its own theme of opportunity and experience.

How it is calculated
- The first pinnacle is month plus day; the second is day plus year.
- The third is the sum of the first two pinnacles; the fourth is month plus year.
- The first period ends at the age found by subtracting the life path base value from 36, and the next two transitions follow nine years apart.
Worked example
With month 4, day 8, year 6, and a life path of 9: the first transition age is 36−9 = 27. The pinnacles are 4+8 = 12 → 3 (ages 0–27), 8+6 = 14 → 5 (ages 27–36), 3+5 = 8 (ages 36–45), and 4+6 = 10 → 1 (age 45 onward).

The age ranges are not a schedule and do not state that an event occurs at a given age.
Challenges

Challenges are four values calculated from the differences between the components of the birth date, taken to represent themes that invite work.

How it is calculated
- The base values of the month, day, and year are used.
- The first challenge is the absolute difference between month and day; the second is between day and year.
- The third is the difference between the first two; the fourth is the difference between month and year.
Worked example
With month 4, day 8, and year 6: |4−8| = 4, |8−6| = 2, |4−2| = 2, and |4−6| = 2. The challenges are 4, 2, 2, and 2.
What it is not
It is not a warning or a risk statement, and a value of zero does not mean an absence of difficulty.
Period Cycles

Period cycles assign the month, day, and year values of the birth date directly to three long phases of life, each said to carry a shifting priority.

How it is calculated
- The first cycle is the reduced birth month, the second the day, and the third the year.
- The first transition falls at the same age as the pinnacles; the second follows twenty-seven years later.
Worked example
With month 4, day 8, year 6, and a first transition age of 27: the first cycle is 4 (ages 0–27), the second is 8 (ages 27–54), and the third is 6 (age 54 onward).
What it is not
It does not describe how a phase of life will go. It is a symbolic division only.
Derived from the name
These come from the letters of the full birth name. Entering a different name changes them.
Expression Number (Destiny Number)

The expression number is calculated from every letter of the full birth name and is taken to represent how a person presents themselves. It is also called the destiny number; both names refer to the same calculation.

- Each word of the name counts as a separate unit.
- The letter values in each unit are added and that unit is reduced on its own, keeping master numbers.
- The unit results are added together and the total is reduced again.
Worked example
KEMAL: 2+5+4+1+3 = 15 → 6. KOLAY: 2+6+3+1+7 = 19 → 1. Units 6+1 = 7. The expression number is 7.
What it is not
It is not a measure of ability and not a career assessment. It is a symbolic heading derived from letter values.
Soul Urge Number
Possible values1–9, 11, 22, 33
The soul urge number is calculated from the vowels of the full birth name only and is taken to represent the wants and values a person does not show outwardly. It is also known as the heart's desire number.

- Only the vowels in each word are selected and their values added.
- Each word is reduced separately, then the results are added and reduced again.
- Y is decided by context: it counts as a vowel when its neighbours are consonants and as a consonant when a neighbour is a vowel.
Worked example
In KEMAL the vowels are E+A = 5+1 = 6. In KOLAY they are O+A = 6+1 = 7; the Y here counts as a consonant because the letter before it is A. Units 6+7 = 13 → 4. The soul urge number is 4.
What it is not
It makes no claim to know a person's actual desires. It is a symbolic reading of the vowels in a name.
Personality Number
Possible values1–9, 11, 22, 33
The personality number is calculated from the consonants of the full birth name only and is taken to represent the first impression a person gives.

- Only the consonants in each word are selected and their values added.
- Each word is reduced separately, then the results are added and reduced again.
- Y is classified with the same context rule used for the soul urge number.
Worked example
In KEMAL the consonants are K+M+L = 2+4+3 = 9. In KOLAY they are K+L+Y = 2+3+7 = 12 → 3. Units 9+3 = 12 → 3. The personality number is 3.

It is not a personality test and does not stand in for a psychological assessment.
Karmic Lessons

Karmic lessons are the letter values that do not appear at all in the full birth name, taken to represent themes open to development. A name in which every value appears has no karmic lessons.

How it is calculated
- The letter values in the name are counted.
- Any value from 1 to 9 with a count of zero is listed as a karmic lesson.
Worked example
The name KEMAL KOLAY contains no letter with the value 8 or 9. The karmic lessons are 8 and 9.
What it is not
It does not report a deficiency or a fault, and it is not the same thing as karmic debt. The two come from different rules.
Balance Number
Possible values1–9
The balance number is calculated from the initials of the full birth name and is taken to represent the inner resource a person reaches for under pressure.

- Only the first letter of each word is taken and the values are added.
- The total is reduced to a single digit; master numbers are not kept in this calculation.
Worked example
For KEMAL KOLAY the initials are K and K: 2+2 = 4. The balance number is 4.
What it is not
It does not recommend a coping method and is not a measure of resilience.
Subconscious Self
Possible values1–9
The subconscious self is the count of distinct letter values represented in the full birth name, taken to represent the range of inner resources available in unexpected situations.

How it is calculated
- The values from 1 to 9 that appear at least once in the name are counted.
- The result equals nine minus the number of karmic lessons.
Worked example
KEMAL KOLAY has two karmic lessons, 8 and 9. 9 − 2 = 7. The subconscious self is 7.
What it is not
A higher value does not mean a better result; it reports range only.
Derived from name and date together
These combine a value from the name with one from the date.
Maturity Number
Possible values1–9, 11, 22, 33
The maturity number is the sum of the life path number and the expression number, and is taken to represent a long-term theme said to become more visible as experience accumulates.

Worked example
With a life path of 9 and an expression of 7: 9+7 = 16 → 1+6 = 7. The maturity number is 7. The 16 → 7 step is also a karmic debt marker.
What it is not
It does not say that something will happen at a particular age. It is not a timeline.
Bridge Numbers
Possible values0–8
Bridge numbers are the differences between two core numbers, taken to represent how the distance between them might be closed. Each report calculates two bridges: between the life path and expression, and between the soul urge and personality.

How it is calculated
- The base value of each number is used; master numbers drop to their base here (11 → 2, 22 → 4, 33 → 6).
- The absolute difference between the two base values is taken.
Worked example
With a life path of 9 and an expression of 7 the bridge is |9 − 7| = 2. With a soul urge of 4 and a personality of 3 the bridge is |4 − 3| = 1.
What it is not
A bridge of zero does not indicate a problem or a mismatch; it only means the two values share a base.
Time dependent
These change with the date the report is produced. The same person can get a different value tomorrow.
Personal Year
Possible values1–9
The personal year is a nine-year cycle value formed by combining the birth month and day with the current calendar year, taken to represent that year's general theme.

- The birth month and the day of the month are each reduced to a single digit.
- The digits of the current year are added and reduced to a single digit.
- The three values are added and reduced to a single digit; master numbers are not kept here.
Worked example
For someone born on 17 April, in the year 2026: month 4, day 17 → 8, year 2+0+2+6 = 10 → 1. Total 4+8+1 = 13 → 4. The personal year is 4.
What it is not
It does not say what will happen during the year. It is a symbolic frame that turns over with the calendar year.

It is not a monthly forecast and is not read on its own without the personal year.

The personal day is the sum of the personal month value and the current day of the month, describing the symbolic tone said to accompany that day.

Relationship Compatibility

Relationship compatibility is a comparison of two people's numbers across eight separate headings: communication, emotional closeness, conflict dynamics, decision making, trust and commitment, shared goals, financial approach, and long-term development.

How it is calculated
- The two people's core numbers are compared one by one, and shared relationship numbers are calculated.
- The comparisons are gathered into eight headings, and each heading is placed in a supportive, balanced, growth, or friction band.
- If a relationship type and any meeting, start, or marriage dates are given, they are added as further context.
Worked example
If two life path numbers are 9 and 1, that difference feeds the communication heading; if the soul urge numbers are 4 and 6, they feed emotional closeness. The result is eight separate readings, not a single score.
What it is not
It does not measure whether a relationship will succeed, gives no percentage, and does not say whether a relationship will last. It is a structural comparison of two sets of numbers.
Reading rules
These are not single numbers. They govern how every other number is read.
Master Numbers (11, 22, 33)
Possible values11, 22, 33
Master numbers are the values 11, 22, and 33, which numerology leaves unreduced. When a calculation reaches one of them, reduction stops and the number is read as it stands.

How it is calculated
- If an intermediate total during reduction equals 11, 22, or 33, the process stops there.
- Each master number has a base value: 11 → 2, 22 → 4, 33 → 6.
- Bridge, challenge, and personal cycle calculations use the base value, so master numbers are not kept in those.
Worked example
If a total is 29: 2+9 = 11. Reduction stops and the result is written as 11, not 2. When that value enters a bridge calculation, its base value of 2 is used instead.
What it is not
A master number does not indicate superiority or privilege. It is a reading rule that decides where reduction stops.
Karmic Debt Numbers
Possible values13/4, 14/5, 16/7, 19/1
Karmic debt numbers mark four specific reduction steps: 13/4, 14/5, 16/7, and 19/1. They are flagged when a reduction passes through an intermediate total of 13, 14, 16, or 19. The final number does not change; only the route taken is noted.

How it is calculated
- The chain of reduction steps is recorded.
- If the chain passes through 13, 14, 16, or 19 and then reaches 4, 5, 7, or 1 respectively, a karmic debt is flagged.
- The flag is shown in the report together with the heading it came from.
Worked example
The letters of KOLAY total 19, which reduces to 1. That is a 19/1 karmic debt step. The same report also shows a soul urge of 13 → 4 and a maturity of 16 → 7.
What it is not
Debt here carries no sense of punishment or warning, and it is not the same as karmic lessons. It is a marker on the reduction path.
What method are these definitions based on?
Every calculation rule in this glossary is the rule applied by the code that produces the reports on this site. Interpretations come from prepared text pools; the calculations live in code.
- Pythagorean letter table
- Letters take values from 1 to 9: A, J, S = 1; B, K, T = 2; C, L, U = 3; D, M, V = 4; E, N, W = 5; F, O, X = 6; G, P, Y = 7; H, Q, Z = 8; I, R = 9. Other tables such as Chaldean give different results; this site uses the Pythagorean table.
- Turkish character normalization
- Ç → C, Ğ → G, İ and ı → I, Ö → O, Ş → S, Ü → U. Spaces, hyphens, and apostrophes separate words. Without this mapping, Turkish names cannot be calculated.
- Word-by-word reduction
- For name numbers, each word is reduced on its own first, and the results are then added and reduced again. Approaches that sum every letter at once can produce a different value; the numbers on this site come from the word-by-word method.
- Same input, same report
- The calculations are in code and contain no randomness. The same name, birth date, and reference date always produce the same report. No external AI service is used to generate reports.
- Limits
- Numerology is not a scientific method. The definitions on this page describe a symbolic interpretive tradition. They do not replace medical, legal, financial, or psychological assessment and offer no prediction of the future.
- Data
- Names and dates entered for a report are not stored permanently; they are kept only for the browser session needed to complete the flow.
